Cardiology Science Lunch

CSLB : The Cardiology Science Lunch Berlin

The Cardiology Science Lunch aims to promote scientific exchange between translational and clinical researchers. Nested within the premises of the Campus Virchow Clinic, the weekly meeting offers a platform for dicussion to experimental and clinical scientists in the cardiovascular field from Charité, German Heart Center Berlin, Max-Dellbrück Center and research-undertaking or research-applying partner organisations. In addition, external keynote speakers with long-standing expertise in their respective field are invited on a regular basis. The chosen informal format of the meeting is meant to encourage interaction between speaker and attendees. Presentations include a wide range of topics in experimental pathophysiology and clinical cardiovascular science with emphasis on heart failure and arrhythmias. As the majority of attendees are (also) working as clinicians translational aspects and potential clinical impact and implications are addressed as appropriate.

Scientific Organizers:
Prof. Frank R. Heinzel, MD, PhD

Next CSLB - 23.11.2022, Physiology and Pathophysiology of Fat Lipolysis

Prof. Dr. Rudolf Zechner

Rudolf Zechner studies the mechanisms regulating lipid metabolism an causes of metabolic diseases. His team specifically focuses on fat-degrading enzymes called lipases. Discorery of adipose triclyceride lipase and the demonstration that this enzyme initiates fat catabolism in mice and humans overturned our understanding of the lipolytic pathway. More recently, Zechner's lavoratory investigates how the breakdown of fat affects cellular signaling processes and cell funktion. Discoveries of the Zechner laboratory identified crucial links between fat carabolism, nuclear receptor signaling and hear function of the role of lipolysis in the pathogenesis of cancer-associated cachexia, a fatll wasting disease that is characterized by the unintended loss of body weight. Furthermore, the finding that pharmacological inhibition of adipose triglyceride lipase reduces high fat diet-induced obesity, glucose intolerance, and liver steatosis in mice, drives current efforts to probe the enzyme's potential as a therapeutic target to treat obesity-related metabolic disorders.
